Pacemakers are life-saving devices for dogs and cats whose hearts beat too slowly, too irregularly, or with dangerous pauses. When medication isn’t enough, implanting a pacemaker restores a reliable heartbeat and often transforms quality of life.

The heart’s electrical system controls how quickly the heart pumps, how strongly each chamber contracts, and how the top and bottom chambers coordinate their work. When that electrical system malfunctions — sending signals too slowly, dropping beats, or pausing altogether — the body doesn’t get the blood flow it needs. A pacemaker is a small implanted device that watches the heart’s electrical activity and delivers gentle electrical pulses when the heart is too slow, keeping the rhythm regular and reliable.
When a pacemaker is recommended.
Pacemakers are recommended when a dog or cat has a bradyarrhythmia (dangerously slow heart rhythm) that causes symptoms or that carries a high risk of sudden collapse. The most common indications are third-degree AV block (complete disruption of signals between the top and bottom chambers of the heart), sick sinus syndrome (an unreliable natural pacemaker in the heart), and persistent atrial standstill.

How pacemaker implantation works.
In most dogs, pacemakers are implanted transvenously — a thin lead is passed through the jugular vein into the right side of the heart under fluoroscopic (real-time X-ray) guidance. The lead is anchored in the heart wall, and the pacemaker generator (about the size of a small coin) is placed under the skin in the neck or shoulder region.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Most patients stay in the hospital 24–48 hours for close monitoring. Recovery involves a few weeks of restricted activity to allow the pacemaker lead to fully seat in the heart tissue.
Life after pacemaker implantation.
Most patients feel dramatically better within days — energy returns, fainting stops, and appetite improves. Follow-up visits typically occur at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 3 months, then every 6–12 months for the life of the device. During each visit the cardiologist checks the pacemaker’s battery life and adjusts settings as the pet’s needs change.
Modern veterinary pacemakers typically last 5–10 years before needing generator replacement. Many dogs live comfortable, active lives for years after implantation.
