Our urgent care team is the same emergency-trained staff that runs our 24/7 ER — bringing critical care experience to every visit.

Urgent vs. Emergency

Choose the right level of care for the situation.

If you’re asking the question, here’s the simple answer: urgent care is for symptoms that can’t wait for a regular appointment. Emergency care is for symptoms that can’t wait at all.

Urgent Care

Bring your pet to urgent care for:

  • Mild GI upset that started today
  • Ear infections, skin or eye issues
  • Allergic reactions without breathing trouble
  • Sudden mild limping
  • Minor wounds or cuts
  • UTI symptoms
  • Same-day care when your veterinarian is closed

Emergency - Come in now!

Go straight to the ER for:

  • Difficulty breathing or panting at rest
  • Repeated vomiting or bloody diarrhea
  • Cat unable to urinate (blocked cat)
  • Bloated, distended abdomen (possible GDV)
  • Seizures or sudden collapse
  • Severe trauma, bleeding, or fractures
  • Suspected toxin or foreign-body ingestion
  • Pale gums or signs of shock

When in doubt, come in.

Our team triages on arrival and routes your pet to urgent care or the ER, whichever fits the situation.

FAQ

Quick answers about urgent care.

Urgent care handles minor illness and concerns that can’t wait for a routine appointment but aren’t life-threatening — ear infections, skin issues, mild GI upset, minor lameness. Emergency care is for life-threatening conditions: difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, collapse, severe trauma, toxin exposure, blocked cats, GDV. When in doubt, come in — we’ll triage on arrival.

No appointment is required. Walk-ins are welcome any hour, every day.

Yes. Dogwood is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Whether your regular veterinarian is closed for the weekend or you can’t get an appointment for days, we’re here.

If urgent care reveals a more complex issue, we don’t need to refer you out. Dogwood’s full specialty team — surgery, internal medicine, oncology, cardiology, and more — is in the same building. Care escalates without a transfer.

Urgent care is for new or worsening symptoms. For routine wellness exams, vaccines, and prescription refills, your primary care veterinarian is the right fit. We’re happy to send records to them after every visit.
