Why it matters

ICU care is the difference between stability and survival.

Critically ill patients can deteriorate in minutes. Veterinary critical care isn’t just a fancy room — it’s the combination of advanced monitoring equipment, trained critical care nurses, and the immediate availability of specialists who can intervene the moment a patient’s status changes.

In general practice or after-hours clinics, critical patients often need to be transferred to a 24/7 facility for overnight monitoring. At Dogwood, that handoff doesn’t happen — your pet stays with the same team that admitted them.

Our ICU is integrated directly with our emergency, surgery, and specialty teams. Cases that need surgery in the middle of the night, oncology consultation, or internal medicine workup can move seamlessly between teams without leaving the building.

The Dogwood standard

What sets our ICU apart.

  1. Board-certified oversight

Our ICU is overseen by a board-certified critical care veterinarian (Diplomate of ACVECC) — a critical care vet who has completed the highest credential in emergency and critical care medicine.

  2. Continuous monitoring

Multi-parameter telemetry tracks heart rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, temperature, and respiration in real time. Trends are reviewed continuously, not just at scheduled checks.

  3. 1:1 nursing

The sickest patients get one-on-one nursing — a dedicated technician at the kennel for the entire shift, monitoring vitals, adjusting therapies, and communicating with the doctor.

  4. Integrated specialty access

Surgery, internal medicine, oncology, anesthesia, radiology, and cardiology are all in the same building. ICU patients can move between specialties without ever being transferred.
