Why Dogwood

Critical care, the way it should be done.

  1. Five board-certified criticalists

Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC) — one of the deepest concentrations of critical care expertise in the region. Each criticalist brings decades of combined experience in the most complex cases.

  2. Oversight across Urgent Care, ER, and ICU

Our criticalists don’t just review the sickest patients — they oversee every Urgent Care, ER, and Critical Care case. That means board-certified critical care thinking informs your pet’s plan from the moment they walk in.

  3. A highly skilled nursing team

Critical care nursing is its own discipline. Our team is trained in advanced monitoring, pain management, and the day-to-day work that keeps the sickest patients comfortable, stable, and progressing toward home.

  4. Transparent communication

When your pet is in the ICU, you’re part of the team. Transparent communication throughout the hospitalization — treatment plans walked through with you in detail, decisions made together, never around you.

Beyond the medicine

Family-centered care, when it matters most.

When your pet is in the ICU, the medicine is only half of what matters. The other half is feeling like a parent — not a bystander.

We know the stress that comes with hospitalizing a pet. The waiting. The not-knowing. The phone that doesn’t ring when you wish it would. Our team is built around that reality. The criticalist managing your pet’s case calls you every day. The treatment plan is walked through with you, not handed to you. Visits are welcomed when your pet is stable. You leave each conversation knowing what’s happening, why, and what comes next.

FAQ

What families ask us most often.

Yes. We encourage families to visit when their pet’s stability allows. We coordinate visits with the criticalist and nursing team to make sure timing is safe for your pet and meaningful for you. Even brief visits matter — for both of you.

Every ICU patient has a designated criticalist managing their case, with transparent communication throughout the hospitalization stay. You’ll always know what we’re doing, why, and what we’re thinking next. Decisions are made together, never around you.

Length of stay depends entirely on the condition. Some patients stabilize in 24 hours; others stay several days. The criticalist will discuss expected timelines with you on admission and update you as things change. Our goal is always to get your pet home as soon as it’s safely possible.

Yes. We send detailed records and discharge summaries to your primary care veterinarian, and we’re available for direct doctor-to-doctor case discussion when helpful. Your pet’s care continues seamlessly when they go home.
