A Holter monitor is a small, wearable device that continuously records your pet’s electrocardiogram (ECG) for 24 hours — sometimes longer. It’s the same technology used in human cardiology to catch intermittent arrhythmias, tailored for the veterinary patient. The pet wears a vest with several electrode leads while going about normal activities at home; the recorder captures every heartbeat during that time.

When Holter monitoring is recommended
The two most common reasons to place a Holter monitor are (1) evaluation of a pet with unexplained fainting, collapse, or weakness episodes, and (2) screening dogs of breeds at risk for arrhythmias — especially Boxers (for arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy), Dobermans (for dilated cardiomyopathy), and Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds.
A Holter is also used to monitor response to anti-arrhythmic medication, to check pacemaker function, and to characterize suspected exercise-induced arrhythmias.

How Holter monitoring actually works
The pet is fitted with a soft vest that holds the recording device and several ECG leads that attach to shaved patches on the chest. The vest is put on in the clinic (usually a 20–30 minute appointment). The pet then wears the monitor at home for a full 24 hours, going about normal activity. Most pets tolerate the vest very well.
The owner keeps a diary of what the pet was doing at key times (naps, meals, walks, any suspicious episodes) so the cardiologist can correlate rhythm changes with activity. The monitor comes off after 24 hours (a brief drop-off appointment), and the cardiologist analyzes every heartbeat over the recording period.
What Holter results can tell us
A Holter recording produces a huge amount of data — typically 100,000–140,000 heartbeats over 24 hours in a dog. The cardiologist uses specialized software plus manual review to identify normal beats, premature beats (both atrial and ventricular), pauses, and runs of abnormal rhythm. The final report gives a picture of the heart’s electrical activity across the full range of the pet’s daily activity.
For an at-risk breed being screened, the number and pattern of ventricular premature complexes helps predict future risk. For a pet with a diagnosed arrhythmia, repeat Holter monitoring is often used to check whether medications are controlling the rhythm effectively.

How often should at-risk breeds be screened?
