Why Dogwood for surgery

Surgical outcomes start with anesthesia and recovery, not the scalpel.

The surgery itself is only part of what determines outcome. Just as important: who manages the anesthesia, how closely the patient is monitored, and who is watching them recover overnight.

Dogwood is the only clinic in the Atlanta area with a board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist on staff — the gold standard for surgical anesthesia. Every patient is cared for by a trained anesthesia technician from sedation through recovery, with cutting-edge anesthesia monitors and equipment tracking oxygen, carbon dioxide, heart rhythm, blood pressure, and temperature in real time. Telemetry is available during the procedure and into the hospital stay when a case warrants it. And every patient is cared for by one surgeon — with a whole clinic of specialists, criticalists, and 24/7 surgical nurses behind them — so your pet gets home and heals faster.

Standard of care

What every surgical patient gets at Dogwood.

Most surgical complications happen during anesthesia and recovery — not the procedure itself. Our standard of care is designed around that reality, with layered protections at every step.

  1. Pre-surgical workup & planning

Bloodwork, imaging, and an anesthesia plan tailored to age, breed, and condition. The plan is reviewed by your pet’s lead doctor and the anesthesia team before any patient enters the OR.

  2. Board-certified anesthesiology oversight

The only clinic in the Atlanta area with a board-certified veterinary anesthesiologist on staff. Anesthesia protocols are built to the highest standard for every patient — not just complex cases.

  3. Trained anesthesia technicians, sedation through recovery

A dedicated, trained anesthesia tech stays with your pet from the first sedation injection until they’re fully awake — monitoring ECG, blood pressure, capnography, pulse oximetry, and temperature throughout.

  4. Cutting-edge anesthesia monitors & equipment

Our anesthesia suite uses the same caliber of monitoring equipment found in human surgical hospitals — continuously tracking oxygen, carbon dioxide, heart rhythm, blood pressure, and temperature so even the smallest change is caught early and corrected immediately.

  5. Telemetry during & after surgery

Continuous telemetry monitoring is available throughout the procedure and into recovery when the case calls for it — keeping eyes on the heart rhythm, blood pressure, and oxygen long after the surgery is finished.

  6. Multimodal pain management

Local blocks, CRI infusions, and non-opioid options keep your pet truly comfortable. Comfort isn’t just kindness — comfortable patients move sooner, eat sooner, and heal faster.

  7. One lead doctor, whole-clinic support

Your pet is cared for by one lead doctor — either a board-certified veterinary surgeon or a residency-trained specialty doctor — from consult through recovery, with the full clinic behind them. Five board-certified criticalists, internal medicine, cardiology, and 24/7 nursing are all in the same building if anything is needed.

  8. 24/7 surgical nursing

Surgical patients are not left unattended overnight. A full 24/7 nursing team monitors recovery, manages pain, and escalates to the doctor at any sign of change — every hour of every day.

Surgery FAQ

Honest answers about your pet’s procedure.

Board certification in veterinary surgery — Diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (DACVS) — requires two distinct steps: completing an approved surgical residency, and passing the ACVS board examination.

The residency is the rigorous part. It takes three or more years after veterinary school and trains a doctor across the full scope of advanced soft tissue, orthopedic, and oncologic surgery under the supervision of practicing veterinary surgeons. The board examination can be taken at any time after residency is complete, which means every veterinarian who has finished an approved surgical residency is eligible to sit for boards — the training is already done.

Dogwood’s surgical team includes both board-certified veterinary surgeons, who have completed both the residency and the exam, and residency-trained specialty doctors, who have completed the residency and are eligible for board examination.
