Hands‐On Thoracic POCUS Wet-Lab

Hands On Thoracic POCUS Wet-Lab

This year we’re very privileged to bring in three world renowned professors who literally wrote the book on chest ultrasound.

Overview

Dogwood Veterinary Specialty & Emergency is proud to host our Annual Continuing Education Wet Lab, featuring three internationally acclaimed experts from the University of Calgary — Dr. Soren Boysen DVM, DACVECC, Dr. Julie Menard DECVECC, DACVECC and Dr. Serge Chalhoub DVM, DACVIM.

Drs. Boysen and Chalhoub are globally recognized pioneers in veterinary point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). They have trained thousands of veterinarians worldwide, published extensively, and quite literally wrote the book on small animal ultrasound in clinical practice.
Their dynamic, hands-on teaching style and passion for education make this a rare opportunity to learn directly from two of the foremost authorities in veterinary ultrasound.

About the Program

This year’s wet lab focuses on thoracic and cardiac POCUS, an invaluable diagnostic tool for any patient presenting with respiratory changes — whether seen in general practice, internal medicine, or emergency settings.

Attendees will receive a pre-recorded lecture via email prior to the event, allowing them to review key concepts such as image acquisition, interpretation, and clinical integration at their own pace.
This session will be entirely hands-on, providing immersive, guided scanning experience.

Working in small groups, participants will practice identifying and differentiating:

  • Pneumothorax
  • Pneumonia
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Pulmonary nodules
  • Pleural effusion

Each participant will gain individualized instruction and real-time feedback to strengthen technique, interpretation skills, and clinical confidence.

Why It Matters

Thoracic and cardiac POCUS (also known as the thoracic FAST or TFAST scan) is one of the most impactful and underutilized diagnostic tools in small-animal practice.
When integrated into routine evaluations, it allows clinicians to quickly and safely assess patients with respiratory effort, abnormal lung sounds, or nonspecific respiratory distress — guiding diagnostic and therapeutic decisions without delay.

This lab bridges the gap between theory and clinical application, empowering veterinarians to confidently use ultrasound as an extension of the physical exam for faster, more accurate assessment and improved patient outcomes.
